In this lecture, we shall start more advanced part of the course. On the basis of observation that the Riemann invariants coincide with the end points of the bands in the spectrum of the Lame (or Schroedinger) equation, we relate the KdV equation with linear spectral problem and show that the KdV equation can be represented as a compatibility condition of two linear equations.
