In this lecture, we shall introduce the Korteweg-de Vries equation for description of combined action of nonlinear and dispersiveeffects. Periodic solution of this equation will be derived.Basic notions of Whitham modulation theory will be introduced.They will be illustrated by their application to a simple example of modulated linear waves.
