The Scan Statistics have been useful for the computational analysis of DNA and protein sequences in recent years. Chan and Zhang (2007) provided analytical formulas and an importance sampling method for approximating the tail probabilities of scan statistics. Currently, available p value approximations for scan statistics of point processes only focused on the case of 0-1 processes but cannot directly handle a scoring or weighting scheme proposed by Rajewsky et al. The authors provide p value approximations, apply the formulae to the scoring-schemes case, and illustrate an application of their p value approximations.
