A Thin Superconducting Loop in a Large Magnetic Field

308 , Mathematics Research Center Building (ori. New Math. Bldg.)

We rigorously derive a one-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau energy associated with a thin superconducting loop in a large magnetic field under the framework of \Gamma convergence. We prove the validity of the formal result of Richardson and Rubinstein, revealing in particular that in this double limit of thin domain and large field, the Rayleigh quotient associated with the onset of superconductivity differs from the standard one for order 1 applied field through the addition of a potential depending of the field.
