We give an introduction to the geometry of the Strominger system. These are equations derived in heterotic string theory which involve a non-Kahler balanced metric and a Hermitian-Yang-Mills connection. We will describe two relevant notions of cohomology class for this system: the Aeppli class and the Bott-Chern class. Alongside the general theory, we will also present special solutions and examples.
