We shall review the well known isomonodromic approach to the radial sinh-Gordon equation (which is essentially equivalent to Painleve III), from a Lie-theoretic viewpoint. We believe this viewpoint gives new insights into the structure of the solutions. Then we discuss briefly some relations with the tt* equation and the Hitchin equation which are of current interest.
