Using an inclusion of one reflexive polytope into another is a well-known strategy for connecting the moduli spaces of two Calabi-Yau families. In this talk, we will discuss, Fredrickson's result [1], how Calabi-Yau hypersurface families arising from Batyrev's construction can be resolved and compactified using a type of fan more general than an MPCP resolution. As an application, we will show how the result, [1, Theorem 4.9], can be used to construct an extremal transition between families of smooth CY threefolds, given any proper inclusion of reflexive 4-polytopes.
