In this talk, we will talk on Abel's theorem about divisors on compact Riemann surfaces, which characterizes those divisors which are associated to meromorphic functions. Then we will introduce the Abel-Jacobi map of a compact Riemann surface and discuss under this framework Jacobi's inversion, which provides a geometric viewpoint of classical addition formulas.
