In this lecture I will given a brief overview of the modular approach to the ABC conjecture, and then I will explain how this approach leads to partial effective results for the ABC conjecture without using linear forms in logarithms (joint work with Ram Murty). If time permits, I will also discuss some conjectures on the periods of elliptic curves related to the ABC conjecture, and how modular curves lead to some unconditional results.
