We\'ll give an overview of the construction of extremal bundles on Calabi-Yau 3-folds, which satisfy the anomaly cancellation requirement of heterotic string theory. We will show that the Friedman-Morgan-Witten construction using spectral covers of particular class of line bundles does not give rise to such bundles on elliptically fibered CY 3-folds. We give a construction which will produce extremal bundles on these 3-folds. We also go over the Monad constructions and examples there. We provide some evidence for the DRY conjecture and also some interesting statistics in the Chern numbers of vector bundles.
