This talk is about universality for invariant ensembles of random matrices (and more generally beta ensembles), both in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. We will connect this universality to a sufficient decay of the correlations between eigenvalues. These decay estimates rely on the energy method for PDEs. The (random) coefficients of this PDE are controlled thanks to optimal rigidity and level repulsion estimates. This talk is based on work with L. Erdös (IST Austria) and H.-T. Yau (Harvard).
