In this lecture I will discuss how to compute photonic band structure (PBS) by using the plane wave expansion (PWE) method. I will then explain the usage of equal frequency surface (EFS) in predicting the beam propagation direction of light in a photonic crystal. The predicted propagation behaviors of light will be compared with the field patterns obtained by the multiple scattering method. I will also explain the physics of negative refraction, subwavelength imaging, and superlens.
