We will study the paper "Using FGMRES to Obtain Backward Stability in Mixed Precision" by M. Arioli and I. S. Duff. This paper has been published in Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis, 2009. The paper discusses how to abstain a backward stable solution in single-precision arithmetic via FGMRES theoretically and practically. The aim is to obtain double-precision accuracy even when the system is ill-conditioned. Moreover the paper also explains why iterative refinement cannot achieve this goal. Finally the paper shows extensive experiment results on dense matrices and sparse matrices.
