In this talk I will give a survey on theory of harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces (more generally, pluriharmonicmaps of complex manifolds) into Lie groups or symmetric spaces. Their integrable system structures based on loop groups and infinite dimensional Grassmannians will be emphasized.
