Symmetries play a central role, in the theory of phase transitions. I will illustrate this for a variety of lattice spin systems where the spins take values in a symmetric space. The talk will then focus on recent results about a phase transition for spins which take values in a supersymmetric hyperboloid. This model is motivated by the study of random band matrices. It turns out that the analysis of our supersymmetric model is closely related to that of a random walk in a highly correlated random environment. The phase transition is characterized by a transition from localization to diffusion in 3D. This is joint work with M. Disertori and M. Zirnbauer.
