We will examine how various types of surfaces with special curvature properties can be characterized by using conserved quantities of families of flat connections associated with the surfaces. In particular, we will consider the following surfaces from this perspective: constant mean curvature surfaces in space forms, flat surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space, linear Weingarten surfaces of Bryant type in hyperbolic 3-space, harmonic-mean curvature 1 surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space, spheres in conformal geometry, Omega surfaces in Lie sphere geometry, and discrete constant mean curvature surfaces in space forms.
