We will begin with a very general aspect of the moduli space of Calabi--Yau manifolds and discuss special Kahler geometry, which serves as a computational tool in mirror symmetry. After reviewing some basics of special Kahler geometry, we will focus on one of the most important examples - the moduli space of smooth Calabi--Yau threefolds - and discuss the BCOV theory, introduced by Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri, and Vafa.
