Following Mumford's book: Tata lectures on theta III, we view theta functions as matrix coefficients of a representation of the Heisenberg and/or metaplectic groups. In this talk, we review the real Heisenberg groups, the metaplectic groups, and the particular representation we are interested in. Then the transformation rule (functional equation) of theta functions falls out consequently.
