The recent connection between the action of the positive half Virasoro algebra on soliton equations and quantum cohomology makes it desirable to find general methods to construct Virasoro actions. In this talk, I will explain a known simple algebraic method to construct soliton equations and a method found by Uhlenbeck and myself to construct Virasoro actions for these soliton equations. I will try to make the talk elementary and accessible to graduate students.
